Early Spring at Billy's Gardens

Early Spring
Early spring in the Okanogan Valley

Opening our greenhouses to the cold winter air naturally kills pests, such as nematodes, in the soil.

greenhouse pots

The south greenhouses are full of plants, almost ready to take to Whole Foods, where they will go on sale in late March and early April.
fertil pots
For many of our plants, we now use "Fertilpots".

"Fertilpots are biodegradable wood fiber pots composed primarily of Spruce (Picea Abies) fibers, and are manufactured without the use of glues or binders.
These are not peat pots!

Fertilpots are truly biodegradable and are intended to be planted directly in the ground or the next larger container.  Unlike rice-hull pots, or starch-based polymers, and 'biodegradable' plastics Fertilpots do not require a composting situation to degrade.

Because water, air, and roots will penetrate the walls of the fertilpot so easily, there is no need for drainage holes.  The natural root structure that develops helps to ensure a successful transplant."

pruned peaches
The peach trees have been pruned and will bloom in a couple of months.

Billy in Greenhouse
In our greenhouses, we grow our tomato plants on strings suspended on pulleys from the ceiling. This keeps the tomatoes
off the ground, and cuts down on waste.
(This is not an early spring photo.)
