Late Summer at Billy's Gardens ... and things are STILL GOING AND GROWING!
Late Summer in the Okanogan Valley
By late summer, the outside tomatoes are producing mightily. We trellis the tomato plants outside, in the same way as we do in the greenhouses, stringing wires, pruning to 2 main leaders, and attaching the plants to the wires with clips. This keeps them off the ground, and cuts down considerably on waste.
... and we're still busy picking ...
and sorting and packing.
Peppers grow in one area of the hillside
Eggplants grow in another area of the same hillside, as do melons ...
and several varieties of summer squash.
This is a squash blossom, which is also edible and delicious.
Blueberries are still producing and being picked in late summer
We plant white clover between the rows of bluberries to provide green manure for the berries, and cover them with netting to protect from birds.
Workers heading out after picking bluberries.
It's the last load of peaches for the season ... J.H. Hales.
And so, Richard (who runs peach harvest) and Ruth have coffee and muffins for the workers.
Our workers' housing in August ... and two weeks later.
